The term "rag rug" was used to describe rugs woven by hand on wooden looms, beginning somewhere in the 19th century. The primary materials used were generally cotton warp and fabric weft. The fabric was usually strips of fabric taken from old clothing, hence the term "rag rug".
The rugs woven by Patricia Lukas at Loominaries are also created by her on wooden looms, by hand. Patricia uses a strong Belgian or Irish linen natural wrap. The colors are all current, which enables Patricia to create custom rugs utilizing colors derived from a client's wallpaper or fabric swatch. Because she uses mostly drapery and upholstery grade fabrics, professional cleaning can be reduced to a minimum.
Today these rugs compliment all of the finest home furnishings, bringing a room together by weaving the color scheme into one harmonious rug. Small rag rugs are the perfect thing for a bathroom or the side of a bed. Rag rugs also make gorgeous runners down a long hallway. Whether your style is contemporary or antique, every home should have at least one!
